Personality: No one is immune to the sugary-sweet and innocent image she displays, especially at first glance. Perhaps, she is the singular most glorious example of ‘looks are deceiving’.

The first thing you know is that Saionji will never bow down to you. Demure and cute, her voice, choice of words, are all tailored to convey the image of a gentle, playful young girl. But amongst those words are the raw and brutal slaps of her tongue-lashings. She is violent, as seen in the game, where she kills crabs and squishes ants just for her own enjoyment. She is selfish, having no hesitation towards putting others down to suit her own needs. She is jealous, as in-game during a Free Time she is hateful of the attention Sonia receives to the point she nudges Hinata (the protagonist) to help ‘get rid’ of her, in an environment where killing was encouraged and frequent.

However, her overall absolutely vile behavior towards others is all ingrained into her from young. As the heiress to the Saionji Clan, the head of the school of traditional Japanese dancing, she was bullied from young by others jealous of her position to the point of poisoning her food, putting needles in shoes, intentionally dropping stage lights, etc. (Saionji claims that people in the past have died due to the rivalries amongst them.) Her grandmother raised her, but only cared about the pride of the family, disallowing her from seeing her parents when things went awry.

From young, the idea that “You are of noble birth and people less than that will always hurt you because of it” from her position and bullying is deeply embedded within her, causing her to see everyone else as beneath her, especially when they fight back against her behavior, which Saionji considers ‘proof that they are simply meager slaves in comparison to me’. In short, she absolutely detests getting scolded. Also, her grandmother most likely only treating her well due to her birthright and talent, as well as her grandmother’s exile of her parents (notably her father, who apparently pretended to go mad to protect Saionji from a perverted erotic company) etched another idea into her mind- “You need only treat those who can help you well. Others are none of your concern. And once you don’t need someone? Throw them away”.

Some could say that Saionji is almost going out of her way to be a little monster. They’re not wrong.

As said by Saionji, she truly believes that the world was split between those are of noble origin, and those who are destined to serve the other side as slaves. She was treated cruelly from young and that is how she views the world- either you fight, or you get left behind. She considers friendship an illusion, and that everyone should fight for themselves and only themselves. Saionji is certain she is above the notion of friendship- that she is talented and strong enough to fight for herself without needing the help of others, and she need not be kind or think of anyone else. Saionji lived only for herself, and to enjoy herself, whether it be by eating sweets or bullying others. She reviled the idea of friendship, and distanced herself from everyone by surrounding herself in revolting behavior.

And then, came Koizumi Mahiru.

At one point, Saionji doesn’t shower for several days because she doesn’t know how to tie her obi properly. Instead of making fun of her, as Saionji would if the victim was someone else, Koizumi offered to help Saionji learn how to tie her obi. The out-of-place act of kindness from someone most likely shocked Saionji, especially since she has been nothing but cruel to everyone before this. Koizumi asked for nothing in return, contrary to what Saionji believed everyone would do, and even agreed to showering with her when Saionji dragged her along. She warms up considerably to Koizumi, calling her ‘Big Sis Koizumi’ and tagging along with her, saving Koizumi from the normal insults and degradations that spew from her mouth to distance herself from everyone. (She also begins to treat Hinata better if you do all her Free Time Events, accepting that he has a ‘bleeding heart’ and all, but never becomes as close to him as Koizumi, probably because of the fact Koizumi was also a girl.)

Saionji realizes that perhaps, people weren’t so bad, and friendship wasn’t some poison those weaker than her indulged in. When Koizumi dies in Chap 2 and she gets over it, Saionji attempts to make a memorial for her, displaying true fondness of her (and then crying when she realized the memorial looked quite sinister rather than warm). She even attempts to change herself for the better, trying to pick on Tsumiki and Souda less (who she deemed as weak and fun to pick on, almost having a power trip whenever she threw insults at them). Saionji tries to bring herself closer to everyone, though her behavior has become quite the staying habit, with kindness being a far-off fantasy. Unfortunately, she ends up dead before making any real progress.

Of course, the whole events of SDR2 are in fact a computer simulation; in the real world, Saionji fell into despair and was assimilated into SHSL Despair. While it’s never stated how exactly that happened, it is most likely the result of her cynical outlook on humans and their motives, coupled with the fact all her friends (Ibuki, Koizumi and Tsumiki) in the school promptly fell into despair and probably fulfilled her expectations of them. She also has a growth spurt in Hope’s Peak, and perhaps realized that people only enjoyed her shows because she was cute, crumbling into bits with the realization that her talent was practically meaningless and she was not all she thought herself to be. If I get accepted I’ll probably only ever canon update her to post-despair once Orenroden finishes the game. Which is gonna take some time.

She is also xenophobic of Western culture and puts Japanese culture (especially food items) high up on the pedestal, most likely because of her extremely traditional Japanese upbringing.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ “Don’t you know that people who don’t love flowers won’t ever really learn how to dance?” She’s SHSL Buyo Dancer, for God’s sake. While the gentle nature of this dance does not describe Saionji at all, she’s practiced her whole life and is aware of her body. She knows where her hands go, what she looks like when she moves, and moving what affects what- which is actually a very useful ability, especially in the performing arts, or, you know… fighting.

+ “Whaaat? You’ve got no room to say something like that, you gross ugly creep!” While she doesn’t have the most delicate language, she says what’s true to her mind and almost never finds the need to lie. She does put special care into making her statements as brutal as possible, but rest assured, you will definitely get criticism from this girl. Maybe a bit too much.

+ “I made up this excuse that the kicking the flowers makes the harvest richer in proteins…” Saionji thinks on her feet and can literally pull any excuse out of the air. This ability is mostly wasted on making fun of people, but if she ever ends up in a scenario where sweet-talking or bluffing your way out is required, it comes in handy. She also can force herself to cry on command.

+/- “What - no! If you stay here, it’ll be so boring!” Her words are blunt, and while they get the point across, it will probably end up driving people away from her. No matter what Saionji thinks, that’s kind of a bad thing.

- “I’M NOT THE KILLER!” Saionji does not handle extreme emotions, such as grief, well. When Koizumi gets murdered and Saionji stumbles upon her body, she becomes a wreck, losing the ability to convey her thoughts other than screaming like a madwoman.

- “Sniff… I’m sorry I can’t do anything but dance!” Her entire life has been focused on the art of traditional Japanese dancing. While she is smart, general knowledge (how to tie an obi, how to make a pleasing memorial with actual color coordination, etc. etc.) tends to evade her.

- “That thing you all call ‘friendship’ is just bunch of weaklings plotting together.” While she’s been trying to change, old habits die hard, and she’s naturally suspicious of people who try to get close to her until they say they don’t ask for anything back, like Koizumi or Hinata.

- “Shitty bitch! Pukey pig!” Saionji’s been bullied, and now she’s biting back with a vengeance. She has a real tendency to target and insult people that show weakness in front of her to make herself feel better.

Samples
First Person Sample:
Someone- someone better EXPLAIN all this to me!

[Because obviously, the best thing to wake up to in the morning is a screaming girl with her mouth too close to the receiver.]

I don’t know where I am, why I’m here, and some gross creepy lady told me she was my mom! And then I got- THIS THING! [The camera view shifts and a Mawile sits patiently, beaming a smile and being ignorant of her trainer’s horror towards her.] What are you, all super-loli-pedo-perverts, abducting me and forcing me into this situation?! Don’t you know who I am? I’m SAIONJI HIYOKO! From the Saionji Clan, and I’m SHSL B-Buyo Dancer! And…

[She’s probably in shock, and you realize at this point there’s tears streaming from her face.] T-this is all a dream, right?! Which means I’m not dead, but- why would I dream about this?! [In a span of five seconds, she get reduced to a sobbing wreck, losing all sensibility and begins spewing jumbled nonsense in between sobs.]

He… he already protected me from the company, so I should be f-fine… sniff… uuu… no, no, no, I’m so fed up with this! I WANT TO GO HOME!

[And then her crying just gets louder. Joy.]

Third Person Sample:
Another day, another bowl of candy.

She should just apply for Team Rocket. She’ll be their best, like no one ever was.

Her Mawile is surprisingly agreeable with anything, which is great, because tools make very good slaves. Just give her a bit of the share, pat her head, she’ll do anything. It’s a bit pathetic, really. But it’s a trade that works- Saionji doesn’t want to put in effort to care, and her Mawile wants to do her best. Very good.

When she orders her Mawile to crash into the sweets shop and unleash Hell, she does just that. Saionji tries to feel bad, but… eh. Pokémon aren’t really people, as much as others like to think so. And, hey, she was happy, right? So Saionji shouldn’t have to feel bad. Everyone who says she needs to be a better trainer can just fuck off.

Her Mawile walks into the alley on time, and Saionji crouches down. “You got it?” Its huge, metal mouth opens, and a large wad of cash rolls out. “Perfect! You really are my ally!”

…Of course, if she was after cash, she wouldn’t exactly break into a sweets shop. Instead, she roughs herself up a bit, gets a bit of (unsavory) dirt on her trainer costume, but makes sure her ponytails are looking tip-top and that angelic smile is on her face.

(Well, technically, angels are also eldritch monsters. So, that adjective is doubly accurate.)

Returning her Mawile, she made sure she walked with her most demure and dandy gait, much like dancing. Saionji intentionally shies into the broken shop, watching the one man running in calling the cops in distress.

“Uhhhm, mister? I found a Team Rocket grunt, and when I defeated him, he dropped this… I think it’s yours.”

The nights of spying on this one particular sweets shop pays off majorly. She gets a whole jar full of gummies, and even got the man to sort out all the yellow ones just for her. She could get used to this, alright. “The people of this world are really dumb, huh?” Saionji chuckles, the bursts of flavor and sweets reminding her that she’s gone through Hell and came back up on her own two feet. If this was the afterlife, she’s glad she didn’t go to Heaven.
